example的基本意思是“例子，实例”。引申可指“样品，范例”“榜样，楷模”，有时还可指“警告”“先例”等。
set sb an example〔set an example to sb〕 的意思是“给某人树立榜样”; make an example of sb (for sth)的意思是“惩罚某人以儆效尤”。
for example的意思是“例如”或“譬如”，无论举出一个或几个例证，example都须用单数形式。常用作插入语，可缩写为e.g。用了for example，就不宜再用etc。
